We've always had hens since we bought this place and our most recent flock of 10 which we bought in March were eggcellent layers, for the first time ever they have managed to produce enough eggs to keep the B&B going all summer.
The only problem with them is that at the start of summer and the warmer weather 8 of the 10 insisted roosting on a branch outside their hen house. The first time I picked each one up and put them away, they didn't like it and it became a fight to get them in the hen house and close the door before they'd escape again. After a week of this I told them, "that's it, you can get on with it".
Last week Mr. Pine Marten made a visit, we now have 5 hens, 3 survived the encounter, 2 were roosting inside.
