I ditched my shams a few years ago. 4 pillows on the bed and maybe a couple of toss cushions. Guests have commented that they are happy to not have to find a place for excess pillows. I find it annoying when I'm trying to get the bed ready for sleep and there's no place to put all the extra pillows so that's why I removed the shams.
