I got an invitation to join the professional group of a person I don't even know. She is supposedly an engineer for Ford Motor Company. Is this a new scam going around? I haven't encountered it before.

more likely she thinks you are someone else. One of my friends is following someone else on twitter with the same name as me. Ironically that person is an innkeeper in CA.

You can ask them who they are and maybe get an inkling.
