We have the zippy, 'new' terminal that does chip n pin. If the card has a chip you can't use the stripe. Guest checked in today and did not know the pin for the card. Said husband knows. Husband showed up and said there is no pin. Can't run card without pin. Can't skip that step. Called processor. They said I could key in the transaction (at x% more) and run it that way. Said guest has to call bank and get pin removed if they don't want to use it. Guest said nothing doing, everywhere they go NO ONE has a problem keying in the card. It works 'everywhere' (list of big name stores that don't have chip n pin turned on yet).
Sigh. It's all MY fault my machine is too 'stupid' to skip the pin step when it's required.
So, now you know. If you steal someone's chipped card all you have to say is, 'there is no pin,' and ALL those big, brand name stores will key in the card and skip that step. Why do we bother?
