VENT: No good deed goes unpunished

Hi everone! Well, my first season has slowed due to weather on the Oregon coast. All is well...... I learned many things this first time out. I also got my first poor review today! Most of the comments in the review were totally innaccurate. The person said I did not have a comfortable...

To Hot Tub or not to Hot Tub....

I have a swim spa at my place. I do not allow guests to use it. It is for my personal use only. The extra cost to run the spa is approximately $50.00 per month just for electricity. The winter time is much higher. Chemicals are expensive. Upkeep is tough. I do not want anyone else in my...

    Towels and Sheets

I am new to this business and I would love to hear what brand of towels and sheets you prefer in your business? I have been shopping online and am getting a bit confused. 100% cotton? Cotton/polyester blend? 800 count for towels? 100% Egyptian cotton for sheets? Thread count? And how do...

Buying a Turnkey vs. Starting From Scratch

Well...this gives me an opportunity to tell my story, I guess. I retired in 1999 with a disability. I knew I could not afford to live the way I had been accustomed... in a single family home...so i bought a piece of land on a lakefront, zoned RM. This property is on the Oregon coast in a...

    No car?

I would just place the luggage in an "out of the way" place they can get to easily...and be done with it. Service is our business, right? Every guest has a different issue. I find it a challenge...but so far I love this business and I do not mind serving the needs of my guests. I figure...

    Website without online booking?

I do not have online booking. I like to have the personal one on one communication. I want to hear their voice. I can tell alot about a person just by their voice and how they communicate with me when I ask certain questions. I have a "no children" policy, and a "no pet" policy. My rooms...

Taking payment - At check in or check out?

I take payment in full via visa, MC, credit card over the phone. Most people I have been renting to prefer to pay the entire amount in full. Few have paid one half at time of reservation over the phone and the other half when they arrive. This is working well!

How Big is too big for One person?

I handle two. It is very easy and everything flows. I do most of the work myself. I do have a handyman and a housekeeper I have on an "on call" basis.

    The Guests from Hell

I would have refunded their money from the beginning. It is rare that someone cancels. I would rather refund someone's money and take my chances at re-renting the room....than keeping a person's money. Keeping someone's money when they cannot come will always end up with the person feeling...

What Kitchen Items are an Absolute Must?

I have an LG microwave with a toaster on the right side of the microwave! It saves alot of fooling around with another appliance. I like it very much. I wish it was a four slicer in times of crunch. I also have a buthcer block (antique) in the middle of the kitchen. It saves steps. I place...

    Grrr...penance for yesterday's free time

Hi! I had a check-in show up three hours early while I was still cleaning one of the units! I just welcomed them to Hidden Cove and let them put their bags in the room. I gave them a quick tour and they were off to see the sights until check-in time. No problem! But, I am a beginner. I am...

    are you ever curious?

Actually, I never compare myself to anyone else. I am just happy right where I am. I think there is an old saying that "Money does not bring happiness." It is great to have "enough." I am thankful I have enough. I need nothing more.......This business pays my payment for the roof over my...

    Hidden Cove off and running!

Thank you for all of your kind words! I hope I do not wear myself out! Everyone has been so very appreciative. This is such a rewarding business to be involved in. I have a Katsura tree on my property. The leaves are small and heart-shaped. I am drying and pressing the leaves and making...

You will never look at a cup of coffee the same way again - INNspirational for today

I love this. I have never liked to drink coffee, but I have behaved as a coffee bean most of my life. I was diagnosed with two chronic diseases at the age of 17. I have had to live my life to the fullest everyday! "We are not here for a long time...we are here for a good time." "You can't...

What is the nicest thing a guest ever did or gave you out of gratitude?

Hi! Welcome! I am new too! I also got off to a rocky start with this group, but all is well on the Oregon coast! My very first guest was a single gal from Portland, Oregon. She came to celebrate Mother's Day on her own. I was nervous becasue she was my first guest. I just told her she was...

Hi all! I just started my B&B the first day of May! I am full every day this week and just got two more reservations for next week, with another weeks's reservation in September. People are coming from Texas, California, Washington, and Oregon. I guess my website and marketing are paying...

Pay an inn for their referrals?

If I get a phone call from an inn that is full and they specifically refer clients to me; I will pay a referral fee. I also have begun a "business to business" referral program in my town. I am a new bed and breakfast and this is a way to get the word out among the people I have networked with...

BooHoo! 97 years and I have to be the one!

I used to work at an antique lamp shop in Portland, Oregon. It is still in business and they specialize in replacement shades for antique lamps. The name of the business is: The Lamplighter. You could probably find them on Yellow pages.com. The owner's name is Jan.

    A beautiful voice

I cried when I saw her sing. I have a handicapped sister. I have always wished my sister could just succeed at something like that.
