Geez....everyone just take a deep breath here. This is supposed to be a "safe" place to vent. Each and everyone of us here has a different way of doing things and each of us has a personality that is reflected in the way we do them. Kathleen is obviously a nurturer and a sweet person. This comes across in the way she handles situations. IF she is content with the results of her guest handling, then great! This is not a character flaw, it's her way of handling it.
IF, however, she's not happy with the situation, then it would help everyone here, especially those wanting help, if some of you would quit being so thin skinned and attacking anyone who critsizes one of the beloved of the forum. Maybe Tim did not express himself the way you think he should, but you create a hostile environment so that everyone is afraid to say anything.

I think it crossed the line when he went into her online calendar and also when he knowingly posted material with porn links on the site. Swirt is also correct that he seems to delight in baiting people for a fight.
However, this forum gang mentality is also quite obvious and especially with regard to men. I know of several examples of men who tried to post on here and were criticized for misspelled words and poor grammar. Don't make me cut and paste again, but you remember who I'm referring to. So, I think both sides need to take a step back and look at their behavior.

I disagree, there is no "forum gang mentality", just people willing to call BS when they see it.
We all put up with human beings on a daily basis who can exhibit poor behavior. To come here and have to police for the same thing is ludicrous, this forum is my escape from that nonsense, I don't come here to get more of it.
Tim has already admitted that what he posted was inappropriate. I'm satisfied with that. Moving on.

I have been treated with less regard from a couple of the men on this forum, most of the ladies seem to be quite gracious. I also noted that many of the forum regulars did not even reply to this thread. Seems they were NOT in the gang mentality. This is my first reply. After raising children there is one pattern I am pretty good atd spotting, we shall call it the Washington and the cherry tree syndrome. "Yes I cut down the cherry tree and I shouldn't have" and then he does it again. There are certain individals on this forum who have a glass half empty outlook, the dark cloud is forever hovering over their heads. How they can allow guests into their homes at all is beyond me. It is bringing this place down and most are not willing to post anything personal due to it, which is a shame, the comradery is lost. Growing pains of this forum I guess, I left and came back, and now some of the same stuff is starting up again.

Not a big deal. Not too many things are unless we let them be, which brings me to the next issue at this forum.

The rest of you...I am new here too. I have had my feelings hurt a little bit by a replies that, I felt, made me appear stupid, or seemed like an assumption that I am. But that is ok too. Many of you have been using this forum a very long time, and are used to each other. I am learning, albeit slowly, that I will fit in better as I learn what is ok, what is meany to be a slant, or praise or all the other nuances of a group this large. I have been around the block a bit with various forums, b&b and others, and this one is definitly one worth sticking out to learn the nuances of. Unlessl someone gets on me about spelling.

Well, of 28 responses to THE topic and question, we've had a total of three answers and a whole lot of other stuff. That is the only reason I'm even taking a second look at this thread.
The irony of being told to stick to the topics, play nice but be ready for anything no matter how insulting it might be by any other poster and don't push back has not been lost on me.

I had no idea what all was on that website. It was mocking TA and I didn't see all the porn stuff until after revisiting it a second time after posting the link here. To her credit, at least she has revealed all of her contact info which in my opinion adds to her credibility immensely on topic related issues.
Actually, it was after her claim on another thread that she is the "busiest she's ever been" that piqued my curiosity in this sour economy as what that meant. If the insult and name calling hadn't come, I'd have just waited patiently until any legitimate answers to my topic question came in.

I reiterate the question posed in my second response, if we're all supposed to respect each other and we all know some of us have sensitivity to certain issues, where is the admonishment for the lack of restraint of the name calling poster, who not only didn't answer the question, but felt the need to throw out an insult, question my career choice like others now also have and "blame the innkeeper" so to speak?
If some regulars are so experienced with how these threads can go off kilter, and some of us are new and finding our way and what the limits and protocols are, wouldn't just begging off a topic a person has no intention of providing an answer for be more prudent?

You mean like the unsolicited, mass critique of my website the day I joined after being dumb enough to think I didn't need to select "remain incognito" when joining. A website that while home-made and not done by a more technically proficient method, works for us, gets complimented and attributed for the helping make the decision to stay with us regularly by guests.
The couple of former posters and current lurkers who took the time to look me up and email their take on things and offer moral support seem to confirm your statement and they have no vested interest in anything around here.

A website that while home-made and not done by a more technically proficient method, works for us, gets complimented and attributed for the helping make the decision to stay with us regularly by guests.
The couple of former posters and current lurkers who took the time to look me up and email their take on things and offer moral support seem to confirm your statement and they have no vested interest in anything around here.

Actually, it was after her claim on another thread that she is the "busiest she's ever been" that piqued my curiosity in this sour economy as what that meant.
Yes, I am the busiest I have ever been. That means I had reservations on the books in Jan & Feb for April, May, June, July...... Something that has never happened before. I usually sit here in March with an empty book until the phone rings. Now 2008 was a banner year. My Spring was down a bit from last year, but comparable to previous years. July looks the way July 2007 looked and I did not expectto see again until 2010 when the Nationals are in Lexington, KY again. Not being "on the beaten path" nor in a tourist destination my busy is miniscule to a larger inn or area. My City did not know it was a tourist destination until I told them it was.
Also I have been trying to get another B & B to open in my City for the last 10 years. Because there can be one B & B anywhere but if there are 2 or more there must be something there. And trust me - there is something here.
For those who think there is nothing to bring people - take a ride and use your eyes. I have 9 covered bridges, 8 rail-trails, antique stores, craft shops, a winery, history, golf, genealogy.... a lot of things folks in this area had no idea wer even here. I also just got a brain cramp overhearing a former miner who is a tour guide at the Exhibition Coal mine talking to co-workers about the mine memorials - there are a lot of them in my area. I am - as soon as I have a couple days to work with - going to do a routing to the mine memorials. Remember if someone has made a memorial to it or a museum for it - no matter how small - SOMEONE is interested in it. And build a package or a tour around it.
Sorry this has taken so long to post. I have been serving a dinner and having conversation with guests. DH is now doing a show & tell with his toys that interest the guest and the history of them interests the wife. In earlier conversation the guest showed himself to be worthy of the show & tell.
Edited to add: BTW Toad, I am not ticked-off or even mildly miffed at you. All I have been doing is trying to bring you up to date as to who/what I am so you can understand my perspective. Lots of experience here - most of it useless. After going through the years of bringing up my 2-legged animals, running a B & B is a snap because I get more sleep now than I did them. I get at least 4 hours a night now - all in one stretch!

I am back to the question. I am both mildly amused and mildly annoyed when a guest shows up at my door an hour, (or two or three) early and says "we got in to town early, and just wanted to drive by to see where you are!" Methinks - then why are you standing here in my doorway? If there room is ready - they can come on in. If it isn't, I offer to keep their bags in our billiard room and tell them when they can return. Not a big deal. Not too many things are unless we let them be, which brings me to the next issue at this forum.
Tim...take a big breath before replying to a post. I know you have very strong oppinions, and that is ok. Just realize, so do other people. We should all take a deep breath and step back.
The rest of you...I am new here too. I have had my feelings hurt a little bit by a replies that, I felt, made me appear stupid, or seemed like an assumption that I am. But that is ok too. Many of you have been using this forum a very long time, and are used to each other. I am learning, albeit slowly, that I will fit in better as I learn what is ok, what is meany to be a slant, or praise or all the other nuances of a group this large. I have been around the block a bit with various forums, b&b and others, and this one is definitly one worth sticking out to learn the nuances of. Unlessl someone gets on me about spelling.

LOL I'm not sure if this is the one SweetiePie was refering to...its the only one that comes to my mind that someone was truly given a hard time about spelling and grammar and a bunch of other things was this post from a vendor trying to play fast and loose with the truth. Given your experience looking out for innkeepers as part of your connection to your BB Association, I am pretty sure you'll agree that the hard time this person was given was rightly deserved.

Just your average early bird looking to milk a stay for every minute they can and then some?
Despite having every document sent to guests in terms of confirmations, map & directions, online B&B directory listings, stating in bold print our check in time frame, we have had them anywhere from 9:45am up to 2:59pm with as many excuses as there are hours in the day.

The former owner of an inn here in Virginia had a routine that I thought was priceless. The early arrivals would usually come and catch him gardening or hauling laundry.
He would answer anything they said in spanish (or fake the spanish) and they would think nobody else was there and leave.
Since they tried to speak with the sweaty working help wearing a hat they would not recognize the dapper owner when he was there to check them in during the regular check in time!!!
