How much damage will you tolerate before you start charging for it?

Bloody sheets? Bloody Towels? Bloody mattress pads? I would not generally charge a guest for things like this, but how much is too much? I just checked out a "famous" person. Well know artist who was in my most expensive suite. He paid extra for a late departure and paid in cash. When the...

Well, that just stinks! I need some advice please.

I have a guest who accidently spilled her bottle of l'eau d'issey perfume on the bed spread in her room. A lovely scent in moderation, but a bottle will leave you gagging. I am in the office and my eyes are still burning. I don't care too much about the bed spread as its lived a full and useful...

For those of you who take dogs...

I have some doggie friendly cottages that I will need to bomb for fleas. I have never done this before. What is the best way to proceed? Thanks !

Pets vs Service Dogs. What is the difference?

I was just on the phone with a woman who uses a wheelchair and a service dog. She told me it was illegal for me to charge her the pet fee since her dog was a "service dog" and not a pet. Can someone tell me if this is true? Thank you

    Sinage for your 'Green' facility

For those of you who have gone green, how do you express this to your guests? For example, do you have signs in your bathrooms that say something specific? Like how often you replace towels? I guess what I am asking is how you get this message across? Thanks.

What is the most you would ever pay for a set of sheets?

I get every catalog known and I see these sheet sets for big money sometimes $200 and up. Does anyone here spend that kind of money for a set of nice sheets? Where do you folks get your sheets from?

Suggestions for approaching guests who have no concept of a "check - out time"?

How do you nicely say its time to leave?

Cultural Differences and how to approach them.

Hi all! I have been away from the forum for a bit, but I am happy to be back. I hope you are all having a good year. My question is dealing with cultural differences at your establishment. We have a couple here from Argentina (I think, but am not positive). They are both tall, dark and gorgeous...

I won't be here for a while and this has nothing to do with Innkeeping....

A terrible thing has happened. My parents live in a condo complex that caught fire early this morning. 24 people are homeless, including them. The red cross intervened and put the homeless up in a Holiday Inn for the next couple of days. They have lost everything. My father is a diabetic and has...

Can someone enlighten me about what a credit card company will cover?

I was at a B & B meeting last night and I overheard one Innkeeper telling another that a CC company will not cover "Room damages". Does anyone know if this is true? If it is true, whats a innkeeper to do when things are ruined or damaged? Inquiring minds want to know. Thanks!

How many towels do you give a person? What do you consider a 'set of guest towels'?

Do you replace them every day when you fluff a room or only if they throw them on the floor?

    How friendly is 'Pet Friendly"?

I am trying to gather information for the lodge where I work. We are considering some 'pet friendly' rooms but wanted to get some feed back from others who take pets. What do you require? Crates? Vet records? What do you expect of a pet owner? Do you charge a fee? How much? What is considered a...

    What do you do when....

I am only starting to come out from behind the Innkeeping scene and being given more responsibility here. What do you do when your 2 night guests in a luxury suite miss breakfast and come down an hour after the kitchen is closed and cleaned and want to eat?

VENT - 3 O'Clock check in. Is this hard to understand?

Some people! I work for a small 6 room lodge. The owners live on site and I am the 'help'. I clean, cook, bake, answer phones and what ever else needs to be done. I took a call from a couple who wanted to arrive by 12 noon. I apologized to them that that was not possible as the current guests...

    Its Cougar Season

One of the places that I work has a repeat guest that sometimes raises eyebrows. She is an attractive woman in the 45 to 55 age range and often frequents the Lodge with unusually young male companions. Personally, its none of my business and and frankly (you GO girl!) I don't care, but other...

The art of asking for payment.

I have recently been asked to do guest check ins. This is not normally something I do, so I am asking your advice. Normally, I am a behind the scenes person ie: cooking, cleaning, laundry, gardening etc. The Inn where I have been asked to do this, takes payment at check in rather than check out...

What bugs you? Innkeeping pet peeves

My biggest one is smokers who go outdoors to smoke and then bring their butts back into the room and put them in the trash can, successfully sticking up the room. Come on people! That is what the ashtray is for!

    The quest for wellness

How do you stay well when everyone else is sick? If you are greeting a guest and they are obviously sick, do you shake their hand or avoid contact? What about cleaning rooms where guests are sick? Touching dishes, doorknobs, etc. I know its sounds paranoid, but if I'm not well, I can't work. Advice?
